Adventures of Day 2!
5/11/21 10:30 pm
Hello and welcome back! Day two was very exciting and successful! I headed up to Mud Pond around 11 am with my backpack full of ingredients, a WhisperLite, and pots and pans designed for this kind of baking and cooking.
I took Dave’s Trial to Johnson Road and then hopped onto Mud Pond Trail for the last few minutes. I’d never been to the lean-to before and it is such a pretty place! I ran into another group who is working there for their Senior Project. I started mixing my ingredients for biscuits. The recipe I was given didn’t tell me real measurements so I had to guess and eyeball everything. I was a little concerned I had added too much baking powder but found out later I had nothing to worry about.
The other group left to get lunch so I set up my stove, I’m using a WhisperLite, in the lean-to. It’s been a while since I’d used a stove. I was on Mountain Classroom last winter, which sparked part of the idea for this project. I lit the stove and found out very quickly I had put too much fuel in the stove when I went to prime it. Finally, after what felt like minutes the flames grew smaller and I turned on the stove.
I plopped the batter into the oiled pan, covered it with a lid, and let it cook for three minutes. I took the lid off and flipped them to reveal a gorgeous golden brown base. I put the lid back on and did another two minutes. I cut one open to make sure it was cooked in the middle and to my surprise it was! I added chocolate chips, raspberry jammy bits (King Arthur Flour), and chopped walnuts to my biscuits.
Once I cleaned up I hiked back down and found people around campus to try my creation! I got great feedback from everyone, which was rewarding!
Overall I spent 3 hours working today which brings my total up to 5 hours. Tomorrow I’ll be in a real kitchen, so if you’ve ever wanted to see how bagels are made be sure to come back tomorrow! - Sophie
Looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteSo awesome that you just went out in the woods and baked! I'm impressed, especially with not having exact measurements. Looking forward to seeing the bagel-making process.
