Cake? - Day 5

 Well, today was a day. Some words I’d use to describe today would be, disaster, epic fail, and a huge mess. I started around 10 am today. I decided to try making a cake. I packed up my bag and headed up to the cabin. I hiked up there using different trails than I normally would. I took Phelps trail to Cabin trail. The path was so pretty and it was the perfect day for a hike.

I got up to the cabin and realized my first mistake. I didn’t bring bug spray. I had to constantly keep moving otherwise I would be attacked by a swarm of black flies. I poured the cake mix into a pot and mixed in the water and oil. I added extra of both to make up for not having eggs. I added a boatload of oil into the fry bake per the instructions.

I was getting really fed up with all the bugs, but at this point, I had already put the batter into the fry bake so I just kept going. The stove took a while to catch, but it finally did. I set the pan on the stove and poof, the fire died out. I tried three more times to get the stove to catch and each time it seemed like it was going to work but then it would sputter out.

At this point, I was very annoyed and the bugs were getting worse if that was possible. I packed up and left. Mind you I still had a pan filled with batter and oil. Clearly, I wasn’t thinking straight because I decided to put the pan back in my bag. In my head, I thought that maybe it would keep baking on the way down from the residual heat, but I was very, very wrong. I took Johnson trail back down to campus. I got back to my dorm and found the last thing I wanted to see. The pan was slightly tilted and everything was covered in cake batter and oil.

Honestly, all I could do was laugh at this point. I went out to the yard behind my dorm and hosed down my backpack and then did a lot of dishes. I spent 4 hours working today which brings my total up to 18 hours! I’m planning on getting a new stove and trying this again tomorrow, so check back tomorrow to see a cake! (hopefully) - Sophie
